Last Minute Change to Crew Roster for U.S.S. Discovery Mission to Jupiter

Dr. Heywood Floyd announced on Tuesday, January 3, 2001 that there would be a crew change for the upcoming U.S.S. Discovery mission to Jupiter.

The original crew roster had included Dr. Peter Whitehead as Co-Pilot and Deputy Flight Commander. Dr. Whitehead was previously the commander of the first manned expedition to Mercury and the first man to land at the Sea of Fire on the planet's dark side.

NCA Director Floyd cited a combination of technical reasons for the change. Dr. Whitehead will now assume Mission Director duties for the Jupiter mission at Antarctic Mission Control which will be the principle control station for the mission.

Promoted to Co-Pilot and Deputy Flight Commander for the mission will be Dr. Frank Poole. This reduces the total crew of the Discovery mission from 6 to 5 members. This is not expected to present a problem as the onboard HAL9000 computer would be capable of completing the survey mission

The full crew roster is now as follows:

  • Dr. David A. Bowman, Jr., Pilot and Flight Mission Commander. Dr. Bowman was previously the commander of the Polaris-1 XE manned mission to Mars and the first man to set foot on the Red Planet.

  • Dr. Frank K. Poole, Co-Pilot and Deputy Flight Commander. Dr. Poole was previously Director of Cornell University's Underwater Laboratory at Bimini and is an authority on hibernation systems.

  • Dr. Victor F. Kaminski, Survey Mission Commander. Dr. Kaminski previously commanded the orbiting Venus observatory Cytherian Station One.

  • Dr. Jack R. Kimball, Survey Team. Dr. Kimball was previously Deputy Commander of the Intelsat Vlll Orbiting Communications Array serving Earths Pacific Area.

  • Dr. Charles W. Hunter, Survey Team. Dr. Hunter was previously a propulsion specialist for the Curnow Propulsion Division at Lockheed/Martin Aerospace.
  •      Also announced were as Project Manager of the Discovery Mission Lester Chapman and Deputy Director Paul Giroux.

Dr. Bruno Forester, Director of the HAL Corporations General Robotics Division introduced the HAL9000 Project Director, Dr. Siva Chandra, who gave the crowd their first in person glimpse of a HAL9000 computer which will provide the Discovery with the latest advances in automated control and artificial intelligence support.

Also attending was the Director of the Russian Academy of Science Dr. Dimitri Moisevitch, Dr. Ralph Halvorsen, Administrator of the United States Moonbase at Clavius and the base's Director of Science & Research Dr. Roy Michaels.

    Clavius Cover-Up Denied

In a press conference on Friday, December 30, 2000, Director of NCA operations denied there had been anything unusual in the quarantine of Moonbase Clavius last summer for an outbreak of a variant of the Hong Kong flu. Russian Academy of Science Director Dr. Dimitri Moisevitch had filed a formal complaint under the IAS Convention for the denial of permission to make an emergency landing at Clavius during the quarantine in August.

Base Administrator Dr. Ralph Halvorsen cited concern for the health of the Russian cosmonauts as he primary concern and insisted that the Russian surface shuttles faulty thrusters would have merely necessitated an emergency landing away from the base until another shuttle from Tchailinko Base could retrieve them. He stated the severity of the flu outbreak posed a greater risk to the safety of the cosmonauts health.
